Inspiration

Inspiration.  What is it? How do we get inspired? What inspires us?

I think these are good questions. I don’t necessarily have an answer.

The dictionary definition of inspiration is — stimulation to do creative work; creative thought or the making of art.

I try. I look at photographs every day. I see photos that I wish I had taken. I still don’t see what others do. I enjoy photography. It provides relief from a daily routine. I provides a chance to look for things, but, I still need help in SEEING what I look at.

I had the pleasure of meeting Scott Bourne at the 2009 Maui Photo Festival. He gave a presentation on “Pre-Visualization.” When he showed the “Cranes in the Fire Mist” Photo, he shared this story. Scott was inspired by his friends similar photo, set a goal to create his own version, and pre-visualized what he wanted. Little did he know at the time of that inspiration, that it would take 12 years to make it happen.

I guess what I’m trying to say is that I continue to need inspiration in SEEING those thigs I look at and photograph. I read Scott’s story again today and I really am inspired. I have followed Scott and others for quite some time now. I don’t take enough photographs, but I do try to create a photo that friends and family will enjoy.
